About Michael · The Story Behind Toxic Perseverance™

I spent most of my life believing perseverance was the answer.

A Truth Learned The Hard Way

Perseverance is a gift.

When achievement becomes responsible for protecting our identity, perseverance quietly changes from an expression of purpose into a strategy for survival.

I call that pattern:

Toxic Perseverance™

My Story

The kid who kept
pushing.

I wasn't the kid people expected to succeed. I struggled in school. I lived with ADHD and learning disabilities long before they were understood. At times, I felt different. Behind and not enough…

I grew up carrying experiences and emotional wounds that I didn't fully understand at the time but would spend much of my life trying to outrun.

Instead of slowing down and facing those wounds, I learned something else.

I learned how toachieve.

And for many years, it worked.

Becoming Michael Scarano, MD

Achievement became
my language

Despite the doubts and obstacles, I eventually earned not one but two doctoral degrees. I built a successful career. I helped thousands of patients. I became a leader, educator, consultant, non-profit leader and speaker.

From the outside, my life looked successful. And in many ways, it was. But there was something I didn't understand.

No matter how much I accomplished, the feeling never lasted. There was always another goal. Another challenge. Another mountain to climb.

I was achieving more while feeling less fulfilled. At the time, I thought that was normal. Now I know it wasn't.

THE MOMENT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Losing my closest friend

In January of 2024, I received a phone call that stopped me in my tracks. My closest friend of more than forty years had taken his own life. He was successful. Respected. Intelligent.

The kind of person everyone believed was doing fine. Including me.

For weeks, I found myself asking:

How could someone who appeared so strong become so hopeless?

But eventually another question emerged. A question that was far more uncomfortable.

What if I wasn't that different from him?

That question forced me to stop studying everyone else and start studying myself.

The Discovery

What We Don't Process,
We Repeat

As I began examining my own life, my relationships, my achievements, and the lives of countless people around me, I started to recognize a pattern.

The strongest people often carried the deepest pain.

The highest achievers were frequently the most disconnected from themselves.

The people admired most for their resilience were often fighting battles no one could see.

And the quality our culture celebrates most, perseverance, wasn't always helping people heal.

Sometimes it was helping them hide. That realization changed everything.

It became the foundation of Toxic Perseverance: the understanding that achievement, resilience, and determination can be driven by internal pressure instead of purpose.

Once I could see that pattern, I began seeing it everywhere, in leaders, professionals, organizations, and, perhaps most importantly, in myself.

That realization became the foundation of my work.

THE BIRTH OF TOXIC PERSEVERANCE™

A New Framework For Understanding Human Behavior

Toxic Perseverance begins with a simple idea:
The same behaviors can be driven by entirely different forces.
Achievement can be fueled by purpose or by pressure.
Resilience can emerge from hope or from fear.

Determination can be an expression of purpose or an attempt to prove our worth.

Understanding the difference changes how we lead, how we relate, and how we live.

MY WORK TODAY

Helping Leaders Understand The Hidden Cost Of High Performance

Today I speak to organizations, healthcare systems, leadership teams, and audiences around the world about:

  • Leadership
  • Human behavior
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Workplace culture
  • Sustainable performance
  • Toxic Perseverance™

My mission is simple:

to help people understand the forces driving their behavior so they can lead with greater clarity, build healthier organizations, strengthen relationships, and pursue success without losing themselves in the process.

Beyond
the stage

When I'm not speaking, writing, or working with leaders, I'm still a student of human behavior.

I remain fascinated by the question that first launched this journey:

Why do people continue repeating patterns they know are hurting them?

The answer to that question continues to shape my research, my writing, and my work.

Because I believe that awareness coupled with compassionate curiosity can change everything...

PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY

Success is not the goal.

Success matters · Achievement matters · Performance matters

But none of them matter if they cost us ourselves.

Real success is not measured only by what we accomplish. It is measured by whether we remain connected to who we are while accomplishing it.

That is the work. That is the journey. And that is the message behind Toxic Perseverance™
